News bites: Algeria presents energy dilemma, Obama’s climate future and more

By Ben Geman - 01/21/13 11:42 AM ET

Time magazine reports that the terrorist attack at a gas facility in Algeria poses an “urgent” question for western energy companies operating in the region.

From Time:

Can they keep their personnel safe amid the region’s political upheaval amplified by the conflict in Mali, where French forces have intervened to stop government forces being overrun by jihadist militants?

At stake are billions of dollars in investment in the wider Maghreb and West Africa by dozens of Western companies.

NBC News asks whether climate change will get the cold shoulder in President Obama’s second term.

The Associated Press reports that energy companies are increasingly using natural gas to produce ... natural gas.

The Wall Street Journal reports that India and Australia will hold talks on nuclear energy cooperation.
