News bites: US carbon emissions lowest since 1994, renewable capacity doubles

A new report showed U.S. carbon emissions last year dropped to their lowest level since 1994 and that renewable energy capacity doubled between 2009 and 2012, Bloomberg reports.

Bloomberg notes oil is “headed for the longest run in weekly gains” since 2004, hinting at an economic recovery for the United States.

Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.) formally announced his candidacy to replace soon-to-be Secretary of State Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), Reuters reports. Lynch will face Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.), a favorite of green groups, in the Democratic primary.

An explosion at the Mexico City headquarters of Mexico’s state-owned oil company killed at least 25 people and injured 100 others, The Associated Press reports. Mexican officials said they were unsure of what sparked the blast.

The European Union is considering banning insecticides linked to a fall in the bee population, according to The Guardian.
