News bites: Beyoncé cleared in Super Bowl probe, paper giant agrees to rainforest protection, and more
It wasn’t Beyoncé’s fault, according to the NFL.
The league is still probing the cause of the Super Bowl power outage but is “so far dismissing any connection with the Beyonce halftime show,” Reuters reports.
“There’s no indication at all that this was caused by the halftime show,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said, according to ABC News. ”Absolutely none. I know that’s been out there, to say that Beyonce’s halftime show had anything to do with it. That’s not the case from anything we have at this point. ”
Concerns about a power problem at the big game surfaced months ago, according to The Associated Press.
AP reports that “public records released Monday show that Superdome officials were worried about a power outage several months before the big game.”
The Washington Post explains a new agreement to slow deforestation in Indonesia.
“Asia Pulp & Paper, the third-largest pulp and paper company in the world, announced Tuesday that it is halting operations in Indonesia’s natural rainforests, a victory for advocates who have been negotiating with the company for the past year,” the Post reports.
Reuters reports that oil giant BP reported a sharp drop in fourth-quarter profits “after it sold assets in preparation for what could be its biggest oil spill payout when the case comes to trial later this month.”
“BP, the last of the big four western world oil companies to report fourth quarter figures, still beat expectations because of one-off taxes related to its divestments and liability payments, and its shares rose nearly 2 percent,” the news service reports.
