Earth. It’s still warming, World Meteorological Organization says.
A new World Meteorological Organization report finds that 2009 will probably rank among the 10 warmest on record, and that large areas in southern Asia and central Africa likely experienced their warmest year ever.
Only Canada and the U.S. saw cooler than average conditions, and the preliminary data show 2009 as the fifth-warmest year on record worldwide.
Overall, global temperatures remain on an upward trend, concludes the agency, which is a branch of the United Nations. “The decade of the 2000s (2000–2009) was warmer than the decade spanning the 1990s (1990–1999), which in turn was warmer than the 1980s (1980–1989),” WMO states.
The release of the findings coincides with this week’s opening of pivotal UN climate talks in Copenhagen, Denmark.
