Energy Secretary checks up on Chevy Volt investment
Energy Secretary Steven Chu will be Michigan Thursday for the launch of a GM plant that is assembling batteries for the highly anticipated Chevy Volt electric car that will debut later this year.
The department has invested $106 million in stimulus funding in the assembly plant, and has invested $266 million overall in helping to develop the Volt’s battery technology, a DOE official said.
GM executives, Gov. Jennifer Granholm (D), and a trio of Michigan lawmakers – Sen. Carl Levin (D), and Reps. Sander Levin (D) and John Dingell (D), will join Chu at the plant tomorrow morning.
The plant in Brownstown Township is the first lithium ion battery pack manufacturing plant in the U.S. operated by a major automaker, according to DoE.
Chu does not plan to attend the big North American International Auto Show in Detroit that begins January 11, the DOE official said.
