The week ahead: Offshore drilling back on House agenda

By Zack Colman

Members of the House Natural Resources Committee will meet on Thursday to discuss a draft bill that that would open parts of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to offshore drilling.

The draft bill from committee Chairman Doc Hastings (R-Wash.) would permit drilling off the coasts of South Carolina, Virginia and Southern California while reshuffling the Interior Department’s offshore drilling branch.

President Obama’s five-year offshore leasing plan, which runs through 2017, doesn’t allow drilling in those areas. Hastings’s bill would require Obama to submit a new plan integrating those zones.

Nations block some U.S. wheat after discovery of genetically altered crop

By Peter Schroeder

The discovery of unapproved genetically modified wheat growing on a farm in Oregon has pushed Japan and South Korea to halt some imports of American wheat.

In addition, the European Union is encouraging its 27 member states to consider testing wheat imported from the U.S., following the discovery of the altered wheat, which had been developed by Monsanto but never approved for sale.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the discovery Thursday, but emphasized that no genetically modified wheat is for sale or being commercially produced in the U.S., and the Food and Drug Administration has said the altered wheat does not pose a threat to human health.

Nonetheless, South Korea said it was freezing its imports of American wheat until shipments can be tested — the results are likely to be available in the first week of June, according to The New York Times.

Sessions: EPA nominee Gina McCarthy is 'stonewalling'

By Ramsey Cox

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) said he still couldn’t support President Obama’s nominee to head the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) because she is “stonewalling.”

“The job of EPA administrator has the potential to impact the life of every American in both positive and negative ways — and so I believe she has to be as forthcoming as possible in answering questions,” Sessions said Thursday. “To date, she has not provided responsive answers to many of the requests submitted by our ranking member, Sen. [David] Vitter (R-La.), or many of my questions.”
