GOP lawmaker jokes he'll 'hit' lawmakers to restore floor order

By Josiah Ryan - 02/11/11 04:02 PM ET

Rep. Rob Bishop (R-Utah) threatened to hit lawmakers if they did not quiet down.

Bishop, who was presiding over the House on Friday, was joking about hitting the lawmakers, but was serious about trying to restore order to the House floor.

"Again if we can ask those who are having conversations of their own, on the floor, in the aisles, at the rear of the chamber, before we hit you, if you will take your conversations off the floor,” said Bishop.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) and Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (Md.) were attempting to engage in a colloquy on scheduling for next week, but members who had just voted were apparently disturbing order by holding side conversations.
