House rejects massive budget cuts for Pentagon

By Josiah Ryan - 02/19/11 02:53 AM ET

A proposal to roll back Department of Defense spending to 2008 levels, offered in an amendment to Republicans' 2011 budget by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) failed in a bipartisan vote of 76-334 early Saturday morning.

Republicans are attempting to roll back overall spending to 2008 levels but so far have limited the cuts to non-defense discretionary spending.

At about 2 a.m. the House was voting on the ninth amendment out of 19 in this most recent series of votes. More debate, more votes, and a final passage vote are possible later Saturday morning.
