Rep. Lungren: Supreme Court ruling will lead to rapes, assaults in California

The Supreme Court on Monday supported a federal order instructing California to release prisoners in order to reduce an overgrown prison population that is leading to indecent prison conditions. The 5-4 ruling was made possible by Justice Anthony Kennedy, who was seen as a swing vote who ultimately sided with those concerned with the harm being done by overcrowded prison conditions.

Justice Samuel Alito wrote for the minority, and was quoted as saying the decision is "gambling with the safety of the people of California." California has two years to comply with the ruling that Lungren said could lead to the release of 38,000 and 46,000 prisoners.
