Libya withdrawal resolution introduced by 14 House Republicans
Rep. Tom Rooney (R-Fla.) and 13 other House Republicans on Wednesday introduced a resolution that would require the Obama administration to withdraw military forces from Libya by June 19.
"President Obama is in clear violation of the War Powers Resolution, and he continues to ignore the role of Congress under the Constitution," Rooney said. "My resolution reasserts the power of the legislative branch and tells the President that if he wants to fight a war in Libya, he needs to make his case to Congress."
Rooney said the War Powers Resolution requires congressional approval for military action after 60 days, and that without congressional authorization, troops must be withdrawn within 30 days. Rooney says that 30-day withdrawal deadline will hit on June 19.
It's unclear whether Rooney's resolution will be given consideration on the House floor, although he is urging leadership to consider it. Rooney introduced his resolution on the same day that House Republicans told Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) that they were postponing floor time for his resolution, which also calls for troop withdrawal.
Other Republicans sponsoring Rooney's resolution are House Ways & Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (Mich.), Oversight & Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (Calif.), and Reps. Mike Coffman (Colo.), Tom Cole (Okla.), Duncan Hunter (Calif.), Steve LaTourette (Ohio), Jeff Miller (Fla.), Rich Nugent (Fla.), Dennis Ross (Fla.), Jim Sensenbrenner (Wis.), Bill Shuster (Pa.), Allen West (Fla.), and Lynn Westmoreland (Ga.).
