DeFazio is one of the more vocal critics of the Obama administration, and has caught the attention of Obama himself in past years. DeFazio voted against the 2008 financial bailout and Obama's stimulus program. Obama famously told DeFazio, "Don't think we're not keeping score, brother."

In June, DeFazio predicted that Obama would cave in to Republican demands. "It's pretty typical of his negotiating," DeFazio said then. "The results of his past negotiations, like extending all the Bush tax cuts, have been disastrous. So many of us are concerned."

Democrats in both the House and Senate were complaining Thursday night about the possibility of a deal on spending cuts that is not "balanced" by tax increases.
