House to vote down Reid's deficit plan
The House will reconvene Saturday to vote on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's (D-Nev.) budget plan, and will vote on Reid's proposal under a suspension of House rules.
That vote will take place despite a request from a House Democrat that the House not set up the bill as a suspension vote, which will require a two-thirds majority to pass and thus all but assures defeat in the House.
Earlier Friday, House Rules Committee member Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) asked Rules Committee Chairman David Dreier (R-Calif.) not to take it up under suspension.
"My concern is that the Republican leadership will think somehow it is appropriate to bring the Reid bill up under a suspension of the rules, just to vote it down just to make a political point," McGovern said. "I would just urge the chairman and the leadership here ... enough of that."
The House meets at noon on Saturday to take up the Reid bill, which is H.R. 2693 in the House. Dreier introduced the bill on Thursday.
