House preparing to move Coast Guard, maritime transportation bill

By Pete Kasperowicz - 10/31/11 02:39 PM ET

The House late this week will begin work on H.R. 2838, the Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Act.

The bill would set spending for the Coast Guard through 2014, and allow the service to maintain its current personnel level of 47,000. The bill allows $8.5 billion in spending in 2012, $8.6 billion in 2013 and $8.7 billion in 2014, inclusive of both the operating budget and acquisition and construction.

The House Rules Committee has set an amendment deadline of Thursday morning, but has not yet set a meeting to approve a rule for the bill.

—This story was corrected at 3:32 p.m. to reflect that no Rules Committee meeting has been set to approve a rule for the bill.
