House votes to instruct conferees on spending bill

The House voted 265-160 to give House conferees to a 2012 spending bill certain priorities in their conference with Senate appropriators.

Under the Democratic motion, House conferees must seek to maximize funding for a program aimed at fixing highways damaged in natural disasters, and another that gives federal grants used to hire police officers.

Republicans were split two to one against the Democratic motion, and voted 79-159 against it. All but one Democrat voted for it, however, allowing it to pass easily.
