House kills Dem bill condemning Rep. West for Nazi comment
The House on Tuesday killed a Democratic resolution aimed at disapproving comments from Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) that Joseph Goebbels would be "proud of the Democrat Party because they have an incredible propaganda machine."
West's quote from this week prompted Democrats to put forward a resolution that outlines Goebbels's role as Reich minister of propaganda in Hitler's Germany for more than a decade, and says comparisons using Goebbels are inappropriate.
That motion was approved in a 231-188 vote.
"Such outrageous Holocaust analogies have no place in our political dialogue," Edwards said earlier in the day, reading from the resolution. "They are offensive, they trivialize real historical events and they diminish the memory of the 6 million Jews and millions of others who perished in the Holocaust."
The resolution concluded with: "The conduct of the representative from Florida was repugnant, now therefore be it resolved that the House of Representatives disapproves of the behavior of the Representative of Florida, Mr. West, for bringing discredit to the House by offending the memory of those who died during the Holocaust."
