"The Housing subcommittee has taken an important step in honoring our military men and women by passing this critical legislation that will help eliminate homelessness and enhance the coordination of federal housing programs for our nation's heroes," Green said in December. "This is the least a grateful nation can do."

Under the bill, a special veterans assistant would be created at HUD to ensure that veterans have access to HUD's housing assistance programs. The assistant would also serve as a link between HUD and the Veterans Affairs Department.

It would also require an annual report documenting the status of homeless veterans. Green said in December that there were about to 76,000 homeless vets during a single night of January 2010, and said veterans are over-represented in the homeless population. The Veterans' Administration said that number is now down to about 67,500 in January 2011.
