The House held a moment of silence on the House floor Tuesday to mark last week's Colorado movie theater shooting that killed 12 and wounded 58 others.
"As our governor said at the vigil on Sunday night, we will remember these 12 and those who were shot," said Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-Colo.), who spoke on behalf of Colorado's entire Congressional delegation.
"In Colorado, we consider ourselves to be pretty tough," he said. "It hurts, we all hurt. But we're resilient and we will get through it."
Perlmutter said that while Colorado is still reeling from the tragic shooting, he and other Coloradans have found bright spots in the tragedy that give them hope.
"We saw bravery and selflessness and heroism among the people that were in that theater that night," he said. "Any one of us can tell you stories of how people, to complete strangers, were willing to give up their own lives to save the life of the stranger next to them."
Perlmutter also thanked the first responders who coped with the tragedy in the minutes after the shooting, as well as all members of Congress who offered support in the days after.
"There has been a tremendous outpouring of sympathy and condolences and compassion from all of you," he said. "I know I speak on behalf of our entire delegation to thank you for thinking about us, and where we live in our community, because we are in this together."
