House votes against adjourning, sticks around to make speeches

By Pete Kasperowicz - 01/14/13 08:32 PM ET

The House late Monday voted 4-397 against adjourning, leaving members with nothing left to do but make speeches for the rest of Monday evening.

Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.) made a motion to adjourn and called for a recorded vote, even though the resulting vote made it clear that almost no one was in favor of adjourning.

After the vote, members started a series of one-minute speeches.

Aside from Polis, the only members voting in favor of adjourning were Reps. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.), John Conyers (D-Mich.) and Doc Hastings (R-Wash.).
