House votes to rename NASA center after Neil Armstrong
The House late Monday voted on the only bill that was up for a vote today, one that renames a California flight center after astronaut and first man on the moon Neil Armstrong.
The bill, H.R. 667, was brought up under a suspension of the rules, which meant a two-thirds vote was needed for passage. The non-controversial bill was easily passed in a 394-0 vote, with one member voting "present," Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-Texas).
Under the bill, the flight research center would be named after Armstrong, but the surrounding test range would be named after Hugh Dryden, a scientist and NASA deputy administrator before his death in 1965.
With that vote, the House finished legislative work for the day. Members return Tuesday to vote on a resolution creating a nationwide academic competition for students in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and math).
