Thursday: After Paul's filibuster, Senate takes up Brennan nomination

By Pete Kasperowicz - 03/07/13 09:48 AM ET

On Wednesday, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) filibustered the nomination of John Brennan to be the next CIA director for nearly 13 hours. During that time, he repeatedly called on the Obama administration to say it would not use drones against Americans on U.S. soil.

On Thursday, the Senate will pick up from where Paul left off at 12:39 a.m.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) filed a motion to end debate on Brennan's nomination early Thursday morning. Soon after the Senate resumes at 10 a.m., senators will be able to debate Brennan's nomination.

But the filing of the cloture motion on Thursday means the Senate might have to vote on that motion Saturday, unless both parties agree to an earlier vote. Despite Paul's filibuster, Democrats are hoping some agreement can be reached with Republicans to vote today.

The House will meet for a brief pro forma session, but has no plans to work today. The House approved a 2013 spending bill Wednesday and left for the week because of yesterday's snowstorm.
