Dem slams Limbaugh for telling feds to ignore Redskins flap

"This is not the work of the native American community, which Mr. Limbaugh calls a 'bunch of PC jerks,' " he said of the federal government's protection of the trademarks.

"With due respect … the federal government is part of the problem," he added. "Much of the outcry over the name of the NFL's football franchise is due in large part to the federal government's protection of disparaging trademarks."

Faleomavaega has criticized the Redskins name for the last several weeks on the House floor, and today he again said the name is derived from the practice of scalping native Americans.

"The origin of the term Redskin … is commonly attributed to the historical act of not only killing native Americans, but also cutting off certain body parts and scalping," he said. "These scalps … were described as 'redskins.' "
