Wolf recommended several people to serve on the panel, including former Secretaries of State Jim Baker and Madeleine Albright, as well as former Rep. Lee Hamilton (D-Ind.) and former Sen. Chuck Robb (D-Va.). He also recommended several senior military officers and former diplomats to sit on the panel.
Wolf said he doubts an advisory panel would immediately solve the issue, but said he sees "little downside in enlisting their aid."
Wolf's letter was sent just before the House and Senate were scheduled to hold two days of hearings during which top Obama administration officials were hoping to sway members in favor of limited military strikes against Syria. That idea has won support from Republican and Democratic leaders in the House, but it's unclear whether rank-and-file members will agree — many have already called for passage of very narrow military authority at best.
