Sunday: Senate drama may end with White House-GOP deal

The Senate meets at noon, after having adjourned Saturday night without taking a vote on a plan from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to raise the debt ceiling.

Senate passage of Reid's plan or any plan has always been in doubt, and word of a new deal between the White House and congressional Republicans may let the Senate escape a series of failed votes.

House in pro-forma session Sunday, but Cantor says be ready

The House on Sunday is expected to be in for a pro-forma session only, and no votes are planned.

"But given the critical fiscal and economic situation, however, members should be prepared to return to Washington quickly if needed," House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said on the House floor. "We may only be able to assure a few hours notice at most."

Bachmann says Obama unengaged, offering no plan

Presidential candidate Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) said on the House floor Saturday that President Obama has failed to put forward a plan for resolving the debt ceiling crisis, and called on Obama to engage in the process with just four days left before the deadline.

"Throughout this debate over guaranteeing insane, never before seen in the history of this country levels of spending, President Obama has coolly stood on the sidelines, his arms crossed, very simply castigating Republicans for not giving him a $2.4 trillion blank check," she said.

Dreier says McConnell asked House to vote on Reid bill

House Rules Committee Chairman David Dreier (R-Calif.) on Saturday afternoon said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) asked the House to hold a vote today on the Senate Democratic debt ceiling plan.

Speaking on the House floor at the start of debate on the Senate plan, Dreier recalled that he was asked Friday whether the House would bring the bill up to fail, and said at the time there were no plans to do so.

Rep. Wilson says Senate had 'cowardly' vote on GOP debt plan

Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) on Saturday morning said the Senate held a "cowardly" vote on the House "cut, cap and balance" plan earlier this month, and called on Democrats to join with Republicans in cutting federal spending.

"Liberals in the Senate chose to hide, and had a tabling vote to cowardly avoid a recorded vote on the issue," Wilson said.
