Ryan confirmed as GOP vice presidential nominee

By Ramsey Cox - 08/28/12 06:20 PM ET

The Republican Party approved Rep. Paul Ryan (Wis.) as the GOP vice presidential candidate Tuesday evening.

Although the formal nomination of the GOP ticket will take place Thursday, Republican National Committeeman Steve King (Wis.) said Tuesday that Ryan, “has the courage to tell the truth even when the truth is hard to hear.”

“Mitt Romney has chosen the first real leader of his generation, a man who can help us believe in America again and his name is Paul Ryan,” King said.

Earlier in the day, Republicans running the convention explained that while the nominating votes for Mitt Romney and running mate Ryan would take place Tuesday, their formal nomination and acceptance would take place on Thursday.

Romney secured the necessary 1,144 delegates shortly before Paul’s formal nomination. By the end of the count the Romney-Ryan ticket had 2,061 delegate votes.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) presided over the vote to nominate Ryan.
