Democrats approve party platform

By Ramsey Cox - 09/04/12 06:20 PM ET

Mayor Cory Booker received a standing ovation at the end of his speech where he said it’s not class warfare to ask the wealthy to pay their share of taxes.

“When your country is in a costly war ... and our nation is in a debt crisis ... being asked to pay your fair share isn’t class warfare it’s patriotism,” Booker said when speaking about the Democrats' national platform, which was accepted after his speech.

Booker, the mayor of Newark, N.J., co-chaired the committee that wrote the party’s platform, which was released Monday evening.

“Our platform is crafted by Democrats but it’s not about partisanship — it’s about pragmatism,” Booker said. “Our platform and president are not interested in petty political arguments.”

Booker used that campaign theme and said the Democratic platform is about moving the country forward, which is President Obama’s campaign slogan.
