Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said Monday that he would no longer support the comprehensive immigration reform bill he helped draft if lawmakers “start horse trading” on issues within the legislation. “I give you my word, that if this issue becomes one of those old-fashioned Washington issues where they start horse trading, one part of it for another part of it,” Rubio said in a video response to a constituent’s concern. “If each of these are not dealt with as separate issues even though they are dealt with in one bill, then I won’t be able to support that anymore.”

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) said the Senate immigration reform bill “will hurt struggling U.S. workers.” “There is no doubt that this legislation will hurt struggling U.S. workers — immigrant and native born, union and nonunion, poor and middle class — a fact about which too many politicians and labor leaders have been much too silent,” Sessions said Wednesday.

Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) introduced a bill Thursday that aims to eliminate racial profiling by law enforcement. “As a matter of practice, racial profiling just doesn’t work,” Cardin said. “The more resources spent investigating individuals because of their race, religion, national origin or ethnicity, the fewer resources directed at suspects who are actually demonstrating illegal behavior.”

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) introduced a bill Thursday that would prohibit discrimination in adoption or foster care placements based on sexual orientation, gender identity or marital status. “Every child deserves a loving home, and it is just wrong to keep children from a brighter future with a loving family by discriminating against adoptive parents based on their sexual orientation, marital status or gender identity,” Gillibrand said.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) said Sunday that the National Riffle Association (NRA) “shames itself” by misleading the public and blocking gun control reforms. Blumenthal was reacting to comments made by NRA Vice President Wayne LaPierre over the weekend. “Yesterday, when NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre said of the organization’s critics 'let them be damned,' he was talking to 90 percent of Americans who support criminal background checks and other common sense gun violence prevention measures,” Blumenthal said Sunday. “His remarks disgrace the organization and its members — most of them supporters of expanding background checks.”

And for the sake of every American, it’s time to pass immigration reform.”

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) said the Gang of Eight’s immigration bill is “not living up” to the promise that no illegal immigrants will have access to public benefits such as Medicaid and food stamps. “The Gang of Eight made a promise that illegal immigrants will not be able to access public benefits,” Sessions said Tuesday. “We already know that, once granted green cards and ultimately citizenship, illegal immigrants will be able to access all public benefit programs at a great cost to taxpayers.”

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) challenged critics of his immigration reform bill to put forward ideas to improve it. “If you disagree, change it. Let’s work on changing it,” Rubio said on the Senate floor Thursday. “Don’t just be against it, offer ideas to change it. “Don’t view it as something being shoved down your throat, it’s not. You can change it.”
