GOP senator says U.S. debt funding 'who's who' of dictatorial regimes

“Iran, Venezuela, Libya make up the rogues gallery of nations that own some of our debt,” Boozman said. He also cited Saudi Arabia as a major holder of U.S. debt, and criticized that country’s “well-documented” role in “spreading radical Islam.”

Boozman said financial insecurity caused by the U.S. debt poses at least as great of a threat to American security as the nation's actual enemies.

“Our debt is a national security problem, and this one our men and women in uniform cannot save us from,” he said. “It is up to us to make the tough decisions to get our economic house in order and the time is now to act.”

Treasury has said it can take a variety of steps to free up cash to prevent the U.S. from actually defaulting on its debt until Aug. 2.
