Reid to senators: Stay close, don't go to baseball game

By Josiah Ryan - 07/31/11 01:06 PM ET

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) instructed senators to stay close to the Capitol Sunday afternoon as congressional leaders and President Obama furiously negotiated a deal to raise the nation's debt ceiling..

“I would not suggest [going to] a ball game,” said Reid from the floor to some laughter. “Maybe closer than that.”

“But we'll give everyone adequate notice,” the majority leader assured members.

The Senate stands in a recess and could be put back in action by Reid at any moment.

Reid also indicated he plans to deploy an unusual procedural mechanism to sidestep cumbersome cloture votes and fast-track whatever comes out of the negotiations.
