McCain adamantly stood by his comments in the Monday meeting held in the Gilbert Municipal Center in Gilbert, Ariz.
“There was no way that a balanced-budget amendment would have passed the Senate,” McCain said. “If anyone said that it could, they were not being truthful. Hobbits are not real, and the point is that [the Tea Partiers’ idea] was not real.
“It’s not my fault that it was misunderstood. I’m sorry that it was misunderstood.”
One person attending the meeting accused McCain of being a part of the “old guard in Washington” who had helped drive the nation’s deficit.
“You are so out of touch, dude,” another attendee said.
