“I close out in the Senate on my comments with the wonderment we have seen, with the hard-shell heartless attitude about providing FEMA with money to repair the results of disaster,” said Lautenberg. “It’s almost incomprehensible.”
All but six Senate Republicans banded together on Monday to block $6.9 billion to fund the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) from advancing on the grounds that the bill cost too much and that its price should be offset.
“We heard a cry from one of the leaders on the Republican side in the House to say, ‘well, we first have to find the money to pay for it’ ” continued Lautenberg. “Like the devil we do.”
The Senate is set to retake that procedural vote on the FEMA funding package Tuesday afternoon.
