Durbin threatens Senate’s Christmas break

The Senate sputtered and failed on its third and fourth attempts to extend the popular tax cuts Thursday afternoon. Obama said earlier in the week that he would not depart on a planned family vacation to his home state of Hawaii until Congress cleared the tax cuts and he could sign them into law.

Failed votes notwithstanding, the Senate adjourned Thursday evening at 6:25 and is scheduled to return at 2 p.m. Monday. The House also adjourned and will hold a pro forma session Friday.

At 5:30 p.m. Monday, the Senate will proceed to consideration and then cloture and confirmation votes on Obamas nominees for U.S. ambassadors to the Czech Republic and the Republic of El Salvador.
