Crisis might be needed for GOP to agree to critical cuts, suggests lawmaker

There are those of us who would like to move sooner, said Schrader, referring to reconfiguring and expanding cuts planned for the federal government as well as scaling back the Bush-era tax cuts that are also set to expire next year. [I]t may take a crisis when people see these tax cuts expiring and the defense cuts coming into play, that you get a lot of Republicans getting a change of heart and wanting to do the right thing.

Schrader went on to suggest that the political will to do the right thing might not be available until after the November election.

It could be after the election, to be very honest, the second-term congressman predicted, as reported Tuesday by the Statesman Journal of Salem, Ore.
