Corker: Obama's budget 'laughable'

By Josiah Ryan - 02/13/12 04:59 PM ET

Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) dismissed President Obama's budget on Monday as a "laughable."

"It's a laughable document, one that really makes a mockery of the American people,” said Corker. "[I] am very disappointed."

In his criticism, delivered from the Senate floor, Corker said the document sent by the president to Congress on Monday would do nothing to address the nation's deep deficit problem.

"I think it irresponsible for the president not to lay out his approach for dealing with these [deficit issues]," continued Corker. "[A]ll of us need to know what our chief executives plans are for the country."

President Obama on Monday morning sent Congress a $3.8 trillion budget proposal, which he called a “reflection of shared responsibility.” The plan would lower deficit predictions over the next decade by $3 trillion financed with $1.5 trillion in new taxes and savings from ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and some cuts in mandatory spending.

Corker also picked up on a point Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) made earlier in the day, in pointing out that it seems many Democrats in Congress also do not support the plan.

"My Democratic colleagues, I am sure many of them are wondering what in the world has been handed to us?" said Corker. "[I] know there is a lot of disappointment on both side of the aisle about what that budget says."
