Senate to cast vote on GOP's JOBS Act on Tuesday
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Thursday announced the Senate would cast its first procedural vote on House Republicans' JOBS bill on Tuesday despite rising opposition from some Senate Democrats.
Reid also announced cloture votes on a slightly more controversial amendment that would reauthorize the Import Export Bank and a substitute amendment that would make minor changes to the underlying bill.
"Last week the House passed the pending small-business bill by a vote of 390-23," said Reid. “President Obama has endorsed the bill very publicly, and the Senate should consider it expeditiously and pass in short order."
Shortly after Reid announced the votes, however, his No. 2, Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), once again registered his disapproval of the bill, saying the Senate ought to stop it.
"The Republican leader has been frantic to bring this bill to the floor," Durbin said moments after he announced the vote. "The bill basically exempts a large number of new startup companies from basic regulation."
