Casey introduces call-center outsourcing bill

By Ramsey Cox - 07/19/12 04:49 PM ET

Sen. Bob Casey Jr. (D-Pa.) introduced a bill Wednesday that would force businesses to report if they’ve moved call centers overseas and make them ineligible for federal funding such as grants or loans.

“Companies that outsource their call centers overseas shouldn’t see the benefits of government grants and loans,” Casey said. “Keeping call center jobs in Pennsylvania is good for our workers and our economy, and my bill will send a clear signal that outsourcing jobs will not be rewarded.”

Casey said call centers are an important job source for his state.

The bill would instruct the Department of Labor to form a list of all companies that outsource their customer-service call centers.

S. 3402 would also require government agencies to give preference to U.S. employers that don’t appear on the list.

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) is a co-sponsor on the bill.
