Sen. Lautenberg calls Ryan-Romney budget plan 'cruel'

By Ramsey Cox - 09/12/12 02:55 PM ET

Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) went after “lyin’ Ryan” when explaining how vice presidential candidate Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-Wis.) budget is only good for the wealthiest Americans.

“Today I want to look at the numbers in Raul Ryan’s budget because numbers don’t lie even if some politicians do,” Lautenberg said Wednesday in a speech on the Senate floor.

Ryan serves as the House Budget Committee Chairman and his running mate, Mitt Romney, endorsed his budget plan calling it “marvelous” earlier this year.

“When we see the budget by Paul Ryan called ‘marvelous’ by Mitt Romney … we should be deeply disturbed,” Lautenberg said. “It’s an outrage for Republican to say we should reduce the tax burden of the wealthiest at the expense of the middle class.”

Lautenberg said Ryan’s fiscal plan “cruelly” slashes education funding and would kick 200,000 preschool students out of the federal program called Head Start, among other things.

“Paul Ryan and his running mate are offering tax cut for the rich and austerity for the rest,” Lautenberg said. “Paul Ryan knows very well that he can’t afford to tell the American people what he’s really for because they know that there wouldn’t be any buyers for what he’s selling.”

Since returning from recess, Senate Democrats have been going after Ryan’s budget, saying the American people deserve to know what is in it.
