Harkin: Ryan budget would take country back 100 years

By Ramsey Cox - 09/13/12 02:38 PM ET

Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), in his continued quest to discredit vice presidential candidate Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-Wis.) budget, said Ryan’s plan would take the country back more than 100 years.

“This is turning America back to where this country was before Roosevelt — not Franklin, I mean Theodore,” Harkin said on the Senate floor Thursday. “That’s how far back this budget would take us.”

Harkin has taken the floor every day since Congress returned from the August recess to tell Americans what’s in the Ryan budget, which his running mate Mitt Romney endorsed. Harkin has called the budget their blueprint for America.

On Thursday, Harkin pointed out the cuts in Ryan’s budget that would affect rural America through agriculture and energy spending reductions. Earlier this week he said Ryan’s budget would shred healthcare and education spending, while giving the wealthiest citizens tax cuts.

Harkin said he would continue to speak out against the Romney-Ryan spending plan on the floor until the Senate adjourns for the election season.
