Corker: Why is Biden misleading Americans on Libyan attack?

By Ramsey Cox - 10/12/12 03:04 PM ET

Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), along with several other Republicans, criticized Vice President Biden's statement in Thursday's debate about the security situation in Libya.

In a statement Friday, Corker said Biden blamed the intelligence community for the administration's initial false assessment of what led to the deadly attacks on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. The administration had originally linked the attack to a video depicting the Prophet Muhammad, which outraged Muslims across the world, but it later came out that the killings were part of a planned terrorist attack.

Corker also said that Biden mistakenly claimed that no requests were made for additional security by U.S. officials in Libya prior to the attack on Sept. 11, 2012, where four Americans were killed, including U.S. ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens.

"The vice president's comments last night about the situation in Benghazi, which claimed the lives of four Americans, absolutely do not square with facts on the ground in Libya," said Corker. "Within 24 hours of the incident the administration knew that this was an orchestrated terrorist attack, and they clearly were aware of the specific details, including requests for additional security, that have finally been made public this week.

"With the vice president continuing this ruse with his comments last night, all Americans should ask what the administration is trying to hide."

Earlier this week, Corker was in Libya on a fact-finding mission and House Republicans held a hearing on the matter.
