After moment of silence on Boston Marathon bombings, Senate confirms O'Connell

Two people were reportedly killed and nearly two dozen injured Monday after two explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

After the moment of silence the Senate then confirmed O’Connell, who will serve as district judge for the central district of California, on a 92-0 vote.

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) praised O’Connell as a “wonderful nominee” ahead of the vote, pointing out that O’Connell is an expert in criminal law.

“She has had a very diverse legal career,” Boxer said. “She’ll be an excellent addition to the California bench.”

For the remainder of the week, the Senate is expected to vote on amendments to the gun-control bill, S. 649, the Safe Communities, Safe Schools Act, which would expand background checks on gun purchases, create new penalties on straw purchases and include new funding for school security.
