Senate to hold hearings examining the immigration reform bill

The bipartisan group of senators, known as the Gang of Eight, introduced S. 744, which would create a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants already in the country, toughen border security, create a guest worker program and boost high-skilled immigration.

Some Republicans have complained that the legislation is being rushed through and that it would provide amnesty for illegal residents before strengthening border enforcement. But lawmakers have had weeks to read the more than 800-page bill, and it likely won’t reach the Senate floor until the end of this month.

On Tuesday, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee will examine border security provisions within S. 744. And the Joint Economic Committee will hold hearings Tuesday and Wednesday on the economic contributions of immigration. The president of Americans for Tax Reform, Grover Norquist, will testify before the joint committee on Tuesday morning.

Details on these and other committee hearings follow.
