Senate committee will begin work on military sexual assault legislation

Earlier this month, the Pentagon announced that 26,000 sexual assaults took place across the armed forces in 2012. Since the announcement, lawmakers have introduced several bills trying to address the problem.

Sens. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) and Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) introduced the Combating Military Sexual Assault Act, which would create a special victims unit to help sexual assault victims through the legal process and encourage victims to report assaults among other things.

On Thursday, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will hold a hearing on labor issues in Bangladesh. More than 1,000 workers died in Bangladesh last month when a garment factory building collapsed. Democrats have been calling for legislation to protect workers since U.S. retailers, such as Wal-Mart, sell some of the garments made at the factory.
