Cruz’s comments come a week after Obama recognized that Syrian President Bashar Assad has used chemical weapons against his own people. This prompted Obama to pledge support to Syrian rebels fighting to overturn the Assad regime. Obama has said the United States would arm some of the rebel groups.

Cruz suggested instead that U.S. forces and allies should enter Syria and destroy the chemical weapons before they ended up in the hands of terrorists.

“We need to be developing a practical plan to go in and destroy the chemical weapons and get out,” Cruz said.

Cruz said arming some of the “good” rebels was foolish because many of the rebels have been linked to al Qaeda groups.

“Don’t give weapons to people who hate us,” Cruz said. “Don’t arm al Qaeda. Don’t arm those who want to kill us.”

Cruz said he was “deeply disappointed” that Obama hasn’t clearly laid out his plans to Congress or the public.
