The Next Generation Research Act would create a new initiative within the National Institute of Health (NIH) to help support young researchers.

Democrats have been critical of sequestration spending cuts to the NIH, which funds medical research on cancer treatments among other things. More than $1.5 billion of the institute's budget has been cut by sequestration.

Baldwin said continued federal cuts to research projects could cause some young researchers to leave the field if their projects can’t get funding. Her bill aims to prevent that.

The bill would also require a comprehensive study on ways the United States can encourage a strong next generation of researchers and how budget cuts affect harm projects.

Wisconsin gets more than $800 million a year in NIH funding.
