The government shut down at midnight Tuesday because lawmakers couldn’t agree on a funding bill. “My message to the House Republican Leadership is stop the games — the government is shutdown,” Reid said Tuesday evening. “We want the government open.”

Reid and other Democrats said if the House would first pass a “clean” funding bill, then they would be willing to enter negotiations on a long-term measure.

“Pass the legislation to reopen the government and then we’ll talk about anything they want to talk about,” Reid said.

It's unclear where the fight will go from here, with both sides digging in for the first government shutdown since 1997.
