Hoeven says he’s ‘hopeful’ the House will appoint farm bill conferees

“I believe the farm bill — and programs like it — can be a part of the debt ceiling solution because it can provide real savings toward the deficit,” Hoeven said. “In the case of the farm bill, that means more than $24 billion in savings.”

The Senate passed a farm bill earlier this year that reduced spending levels by $24 billion. The House separated food assistance programs from the agriculture policy and slashed food assistance by nearly $40 billion, meaning conferees will have their work cut out for them.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) named conferees last week, and Hoeven was among them.
