Stabenow chides House for not being educated on government services

Republicans' latest attempt to defund ObamaCare is to pass funding measures for national parks, the National Guard, veterans' programs and the National Institutes of Health, among several others.

Stabenow said the “mini” spending bills from the House make it seem like they didn’t even know the government provided some of those services until they were no longer being provided.

“It’s almost like we’re educating these members of what government does … like they didn’t realize that was something the government did,” Stabenow said.

Her remarks came moments after senators met with President Obama at the White House to discuss the government shutdown and the debt-ceiling increase.

Lawmakers are also working against an Oct. 17 deadline for raising the nation's borrowing limit.

Treasury and the White House have warned that if the limit is not lifted, the government could default on its debt, leading to a recession.
