Isakson: NLRB's 'invalid quorum' decisions are 'unconscionable'

By Ramsey Cox

Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) said Thursday that it is “unconscionable” that the National Labor Relations Board (NLBR) is still issuing decisions with an "invalid quorum."

“It is unconscionable that the National Labor Relations Board is continuing to issue decisions and regulations with an invalid quorum of one,” Isakson said. “A federal board such as this cannot operate with only one constitutional board member.”

Colo. lawmakers call on Congress to pass five-year farm bill

By Ramsey Cox

Colorado lawmakers called on leaders of the Senate and House Agriculture Committees to pass a five-year farm bill during this Congress.

“We believe the Farm Bill represents a tremendous opportunity to support one of Colorado's and America's most crucial economic engines, to provide relief to farmers and ranchers affected by historic drought conditions, and to make a meaningful contribution toward national debt and deficit reduction goals," the lawmakers wrote Wednesday in a letter to Sens. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) and Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) and Reps. Frank Lucas (R-Okla.) and Collin Peterson (D-Minn.).

GOP lawmaker: Romney a ‘kid’ who needed help from ‘dad’ Ryan

By Pete Kasperowicz

Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas) this week compared GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney to a "kid" who couldn't explain his science project, and said his weakness as a candidate cost Republicans the White House last year.

In a speech before the National Center for Policy Analysis in Dallas, Sessions also characterized House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), Romney's vice presidential pick, as the "dad" on the GOP ticket, saying he had a better handle on policy.

"Mitt Romney appeared like a kid who showed up for his science project and the teacher said, 'Explain it,' and Mitt couldn't do it," Sessions said in a speech in Dallas, according to D Magazine. "His 'dad,' Paul Ryan, explained it to him, but Mitt didn't get it. ... That's why we lost the last election."

By Pete Kasperowicz

Twenty-one California Democrats have asked the Obama administration to investigate reports that mental health centers in Nevada are dumping their mental patients across state lines.

The letter, led by Rep. Ami Bera (D-Calif.), is a response to a Sacramento Bee story that said Nevada clinics are putting psychiatric patients on buses with one-way tickets to California. They noted reports that as many as 1,500 patients have been dumped, which also burdens California with treatment costs.

Lawmakers announce bill to end cheating, doping in horse racing

By Ramsey Cox

Sen. Tom Udall (D-N.M.) and Reps. Ed Whitfield (R-Ky.) and Joe Pitts (R-Pa.) announced Wednesday that they would introduce a bill to end doping in horse racing and kick cheaters out of the sport.

“The chronic abuse of race horses with painkillers and other drugs is dangerous and just plain wrong," Udall said. "Racing groups have promised drug reform for decades, but this bill would bring in real standards and enforcement from an organization with a proven record for cleaning up sports."
