By Pete Kasperowicz

Rep. John Mica (R-Fla.) last week dropped his support for creating a select committee on last year's attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.

Mica added his name to the resolution calling for a select committee in late March. But last Thursday, he asked that his name be removed from that resolution, which was introduced by Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.).

Sen. Brown: House cuts to food stamps 'won't pass muster' in Senate

By Ramsey Cox

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) said the House farm bill cuts to food stamps, also called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), could not pass in the Senate.

“We shouldn’t be cutting federal nutrition programs,” Brown said Monday. “[The Senate] bill cuts $4 billion from SNAP and that’s already $4 billion too much. … The House’s $20 billion in SNAP cuts won’t pass muster in the Senate and certainly won’t get my support.”

Lawmaker: Effort to change Boy Scout gay policy reveals 'intolerant left'

By Pete Kasperowicz

Freshman Rep. Jim Bridenstine (R-Okla.) on Monday said efforts to force the Boy Scouts of America to allow gay members into the group shows that the left is "intolerant" and won't rest until it "bullies" that group and others to accept its views.

"Some of us in America still believe in the concept of sexual morality, that sex is intended for one man and one woman within the institution of marriage," Bridenstine said on the House floor. "Organizations that hold this philosophy and promote it among our youth should be commended, or at least, you would think, tolerated.

Merkley amendment would repeal ‘special interest loophole’ for Monsanto

By Ramsey Cox

Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) said he would introduce an amendment to the farm bill this week that would stop farmers from using harmful genetically modified seeds from the major seed producer, Monsanto.

Merkley said the Monsanto Protection Act was tucked into the continuing resolution passed in March to avert a government shutdown. He vowed that his amendment would repeal the “unacceptable” law.

“The Monsanto Protection Act is an outrageous example of a special interest loophole,” Merkley said Monday. “This provision nullifies the actions of a court that is enforcing the law to protect farmers, the environment and public health. That is unacceptable.”

Dems look to crack down on anti-abortion 'crisis pregnancy centers'

By Pete Kasperowicz

Democrats in the House and Senate are looking to stop what they say are deceptive advertising practices by anti-abortion health clinics that imply they offer abortion services, but instead encourage birth and promote adoption.

The legislation is aimed at crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs), which are clinics often set up by a church or other anti-abortion groups. Democrats in Congress and other pro-abortion groups say these clinics are known to indicate they can perform abortions in order to attract pregnant women patients, and then try to convince them to carry their babies to term.

Monday: Military medals, maritime safety and the farm bill

By Pete Kasperowicz

The House meets at noon, and in the afternoon, will take up two suspension bills, including one making it a crime to lie about receiving military medals.

The Stolen Valor Act, H.R. 258, is similar to a bill the House passed last year in a 410-3 vote. The House should be able to easily pass it again this year.
