Despite opposing the the Iraq war from the beginning, Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) responded to President Obama’s announcement that all U.S. troops will be withdrawn from Iraq by year’s end by noting that Iraqis now control their own destiny. "They have their own fate in their own hands," said Durbin according to WBEZ Chicago. "It wouldn't have happened if the United States hadn't been there."

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairwoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) on Monday invited the public to submit questions for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, which could be asked by members of the committee when the secretary testifies Thursday on issues surrounding U.S. involvement in Afghanistan and Pakistan. "I would like to encourage members of the public to visit our Committee website and utilize our 'You Ask a Question' feature, so that they can suggest questions for our Members to ask Secretary Clinton," Ros-Lehtinen said. "We want to know what's on your mind, and what’s important to you."

Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) hinted he remains optimistic the deficit-cutting supercommittee, on which he serves, will manage to report out a proposal that Congress can accept in time for a fast-approaching November deadline. "I think we can accomplish something on this committee to change the path we're on, and secure the future for our kids and grandkids," Toomey said as reported by the Reading Eagle on Monday.

Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) said over the weekend that U.S. defense spending must fall dramatically in order for the deficit-reduction supercommittee to reach its goal of cutting $1.5 trillion in spending over the next decade. "I am convinced that we cannot reduce the deficit over that 10-year period in a responsible way, the way that leaves us able to still protect the quality of life here in America and to promote good economic activity in America, unless we substantially reduce America's worldwide military footprint," Frank said Sunday, as reported by the Taunton Daily Gazette.

President Obama was in no way responsible for the demise of Libya's former dictator Moammar Gadhafi, conservative lawmaker Rep. Joe Heck (R-Nev.) said at the Western Republican Leadership Conference in Las Vegas, as reported by the liberal blog ThinkProgress on Monday. In the exchange, which was captured on video, a writer for the blog asked Heck if he thought Obama "deserves credit for Colonel Qaddafi’s death."

The House meets at 2 p.m., and at 4 p.m. will start work on seven suspension bills, most of which deal with federal land use. Votes on these bills will start at 6:30 p.m., and each will need a two-thirds majority for passage. The Senate meets at 3:45 p.m., but only for a pro forma session, and is not doing any legislative work this week.
