Reid: Burn US Olympic uniforms because they’re made in China

By Alexander Bolton - 07/12/12 12:48 PM ET

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said the uniforms that U.S. athletes will wear at the Summer Olympics opening ceremony in London should be burned because they are made in China.

“I am so upset that I think the [U.S.] Olympic Committee should be ashamed of themselves, I think they should be embarrassed, I think they should take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over again,” Reid told reporters Thursday.

ABC News reported Wednesday the berets, shirts, blazers, skirts and trousers designed by Ralph Lauren have all been made in China.

The men’s blazers cost $795 each and the women’s skirts cost $495.

Reid said it would be better if U.S. athletes attended the opening ceremonies in crude singlets made in America.

“[If] all that they have to wear is nothing but a singlet with USA on it painted by hand that’s what they should wear. We have people in the textile industry who are desperate for jobs,” Reid said.
